Nele already knew that there were thousands of orphanages in India who rely solely on donations to survive and the conscious effort made by people to sponsor a child in India . None of them receive any help from the state, and very little from their fellow Indians. She says the Indian culture believes that karma has given them their lot in life, and must be accepted as such.
Nele realised that she had to concentrate her efforts if any sponsorship money she managed to raise was to make a difference. She collected a little over one thousand euros of sponsor money from friends in Nerja to take with her to India as a donation, and researched the Internet for centres which had no regular sponsor income from charities. She chose two: both in Tamil Nadu, in the south east of the country.
